Modern Day P31 – Intro

Proverbs 31

I felt compelled several months ago to write this devotional – but ya know, “mom life” and I chose other priorities… We do that! Why??

This is so important! God placed plans need to be a priority. Like dishes in the sink, those greasy suckers keep me awake and haunt me like a scary movie! When Jesus speaks to our hearts – we should be rattled until our mission is completed. Not putting it off but keeping us awake. Stirring our soul until completed!

Why Proverbs 31? Well personally I feel it gets some shade. It can cause some conflict. Especially in our “modern time”, where some feel women’s “rights” are being violated or not held to the same standard as men. Personally, I feel this scripture is empowering and encouraging for women. If you disagree, I hope you continue on and see if I change your mind or at the least encourage you a bit.

My goal in breaking down the verses into small portions is to look at the chapter under a microscope and see its foundation, meaning and purpose for today’s modern day lady. To prove the biblical truth that God’s word is in fact infallible and living.

To begin, let us look at the time period of the writer, the actual purpose of the scripture and why it is perfectly placed in Proverbs. As we know Proverbs is a collection of poems, lessons, and simple direction. The “writer” of this section is the “mother of king Lemuel. “Lemuel” was like a term of endearment meaning “Belonging to God”. So the actual person may not be named “Lemuel” Many scholars speculate that this is Solomon and that would make the author Bathsheba. We won’t spend any more time on that clarification..

During this period of time “women’s rights” were merely the expectation to birth children, be of pleasure, and keep the hut clean!

The writer saw women differently because she was holding her son to a high standard. This may even have been the standard she set for her daughters and continued the expectations with her sons wife choices.

If your thinking that Christianity is against women or holding them back and that this is NOT the way you can live… keep reading sister!

GOD IS PRO -WOMAN! He is a FEMINIST for sure!

God created woman. Genesis 2:1-25 (read it) – God made man of dust. But for women, Oh Honey, we are different! We didn’t like dirt and bugs from the beginning. Boys are literally made up of dirt and bugs. But, you my sweet sister – We were crafted. We were molded. We were designed. God said “Eve was a picture of beauty” that when He saw what He had made “It was good”! He made woman to be desired by man. Think about that a minute.

Jesus, came as God’s son. All throughout the scripture you see Jesus was very fond, loving, gentle and protecting of women. Just the way God made him to be!

As far as this scripture goes the last thing I am going to point out today, is that this Proverb is actually included in the Bible. Think about the significance in that alone. God’s perfect book on life, has a chapter devoted to women. This tells me 2 important things: (1) This is important truth (2) God loves me as a woman.

I hope you are encouraged and intrigued enough to continue our study!

The next post will be “P31 – vs 1-9” . We will look at the “reasons” for this scripture according to the word!
